We've been busy!

Feb 21, 2012 @ 07:04:51

Here we are near the end of February, and we still don't have a firm date for the primary! The latest from the courts is that we're shooting for May 29, but in order for that date to stick we have to have maps decided by the first week in March. That happens to be roughly when the Washington, DC district court is also meeting to talk about the maps. So, there is still a possibility that we won't have elections until some time in June.

If you would like to read more, The Texas Republican Party and attorney Michael Li are following the process closely on their blogs.

We'll keep you updated as we know more!

The first roll of civil government is to protect life. Thanks to the super-majority of pro-life legislators this past session, we were able to achieve significant advances in the defense of innocent human life.
  • Passed HB 15 - the "Sonogram Bill" - This bill requires that women who are about to abort their children be offered the opportunity to see a sonogram.
  • Cut funds to the abortion industry and Planned Parenthood - Some estimates put the number at $88 million taken from all abortion providers and affiliated services--$47 million of that redirected from Planned Parenthood alone.
  • Stopped abortion funding at county hospitals - An amendment by Rep. Wayne Christian closed a loophole that previously allowed county hospitals to pay for abortions with taxpayer funds.
  • Halted several attempts to attack pro-life pregnancy centers and other measurers harmful to the pro-life cause

Hundreds of citizens have offered their help on the campaign in some way, and more are calling all the time to ask how they can join the cause!

So, here are a few action items:
  1. Endorse my campaign - (if you haven't already) Click here to endorse my campaign today.
  2. Walk your neighborhood - We're organizing teams to walk neighborhoods all over District 7! Click here to sign up to go door-to-door and share with voters why you support my campaign.
  3. Host a coffee or meet 'n greet - This doesn't have to be anything fancy. It's just a time for 10 or 20 (or more!) of your friends to get to know me better. I'll come speak to them, hear their concerns, and answer any questions that they have. Sign up today to host a coffee at your home, business, or other location!

Rep. Simpson has more donors than any other freshman!

Jan 23, 2012 @ 07:13:54

Thanks to your support...

We reported more donors on the finance report
than any other freshman running for re-election!

You spoke loudly and clearly in favor of liberty by your generous support. By your donations, you told the establishment that you are tired of the good ole' boy network--you want someone to champion limited government and a return to the Constitution.

Including those who donated since the report,
400 people
have contributed more than
$83,000
to our campaign for Texas and Liberty.

I am happy to announce that we reported more donors on the January report than any other freshman running for re-election. In fact, only two members of the entire House running for re-election reported more donors than we did!*

By contrast, our opponent reported less than 75 donors and only a little over $16,000 in donations. (By the way, the newspaper incorrectly reported that Mr. Merritt's campaign had almost a quarter million in cash....what he really has is almost a quarter million in debt!)

Did you miss the chance to contribute in time for the report? Then contribute $10, $25, $50, $100, or any amount securely online today!

Voters are supporting our campaign because they saw that I would stand up for them when it mattered. I promised to support fiscal conservatism, the Constitution, voter ID, and other issues important to East Texas voters—and I fulfilled that promise.

This is an important step forward, but the fight is not over. Mr. Merritt has boasted of spending substantial amounts of personal wealth on the election because he liked his position in Austin. As you consider what you value most in this new year, please consider a contribution to the cause of liberty! You can contribute securely online at www.DavidSimpson.com/contribute.

Please share this good news with your friends on Facebook by copying and pasting this link into your status!

Saddle Up Texas Straw Poll Speech

Jan 13, 2012 @ 05:06:41

Delivered at the Saddle Up Texas Straw Poll on Friday, January 13.  We will post a video when it becomes available.

-----------------------------------

Albert Einstein said,

“Everything that is really great and inspiring is created by the individual who can labor in freedom.”

Believing this principle to be true, and believing that Providence has brought us together for such a time as this, consider with me for a few minutes a “Patriot Dream.”

It is a dream about America’s unique beauty! — not just of “spacious skies and amber waves of grain,” but of a “thoroughfare for freedom,” of “self-control” and of “liberty in law.” It is a “dream that sees beyond the years” of “alabaster cities” that “gleam Undimmed by human tears!” It is a dream about America the Beautiful.

It is a dream of individual freedom and responsibility, of voluntary covenantal relationships of work and worship, of communion and prosperity. Einstein’s statement saying “everything that is really great and inspiring” points us to the fundamental human element that has made our nation and Texas great! — the individual and his work.

But it is more than that — it is the free man and woman, living, working, worshiping and pursuing happiness, that God has blessed. Individual freedom, not government control, has led to America’s success. Freedom, not force, made us exceptional. However, it seems for decades, perhaps a century now, we have focused less and less on this humble yet glorious and dominant...

Ludicrous! Tommy Merritt wants you to pay to attend a forum

Jan 05, 2012 @ 07:25:51

(For our "campaign fireworks" fundraising results, scroll down to the picture!)

Tommy Merritt may finally
appear with David in public!

(But he wants to charge you to attend...
...and he wants to wait until you've already voted before he shows up.)

Can you believe it? You can't make this stuff up.

Mr. Merritt sent a letter on Tuesday challenging Rep. Simpson to four public forums that his campaign was arranging. (The 14-year incumbent that you, the people, defeated last election has filed to run against Rep. Simpson in the primary.)

Mr. Merritt had multiple opportunities to appear in public with Rep. Simpson last election (at least 5 that we could think of right off the top of our heads)...

...but he refused every one.  It took you, the people, sending him back home before this status quo career politician decided he should debate issues publicly.

There were were two very interesting details in the fine print of his proposal:
  1. Mr. Merritt wants to charge you to attend the public candidate forum.
  2. He proposed holding the forums at the tail end of early voting. In other words, he wants to wait until after many of you have already voted before he appears in public with David.
Obviously, Rep. Simpson is glad for the opportunity to speak with voters publicly, but the idea of charging local families to go hear politicians speak is ludicrous!

And why does Mr. Merritt want to wait until after lots of people have already voted before he appears in public? Why is Merritt trying to hide from the voters?

So, in response, Rep. Simpson is releasing a counter-proposal centered around the idea that the citizens should be allowed to organize forums.  His plan will allow for events sponsored by community groups, the Chamber of Commerce, the press, and the Tea Parties. And I can assure you that we will not charge you to attend!

You launched the campaign fireworks!

Your generous support during the last few days of 2011 made it possible for us to launch the "campaign fireworks" on New Year's Eve! Thank you to everyone who donated and endorsed.
