On this Memorial Day, we have much to be thankful for. But what we remember chiefly on this day is the heritage of freedom that many thousands of our brave soldiers have fought, bled, and even died for.
From Bunker Hill to Normandy to sometimes obscure corners of the world, courageous Americans have fought and bled to defend the Constitution and protect our freedoms.
That includes many veterans here in East Texas. Today during a Memorial Day ceremony we will have the privilege of honoring two such veterans from our own community by presenting them with flags. Vietnam War veterans "Gunny" Danny White (USMC), who was severely wounded during the war, and Ralph Landt (US Armed Forces) both served our county honorably overseas. They also continue to serve by aiding less fortunate veterans with transportation for medical care or other needed physical or financial help.
These men didn't just serve for a time and then assume others would take up after them. They have made service to their country and fellow veterans a lifelong habit. They, and thousands like them, deserve our praise and our thanks.
May God bless our soldiers for laying down their lives for their friends. And may their stories and their example continue to inspire us as we work to honor their sacrifice by continuing the ongoing fight to maintain our freedoms today.
